Not As We

I enjoy music that adds to my therapy process; things that enrich me or shape me or offer me insights. This song in particular struck an excellent chord, so to speak, because by and large it seems (to me) to be about therapy – about the process of self discovery and rebuilding.

You can see the video here.

Here are the lyrics.

Reborn and shivering
Settled on new terrain
Unsure, unkind, insane
It’s faint and shaken

Chorus:

Day one, day one
Start over again
Step one, step one
I’m barely making sense
For now I’m faking it
‘Til I’m psuedo-making it
From scratch, begin again
But this time I as I
And not as we

Verse 2:

Gun-shy and shivering
Tear it without a hand
Feign brave but still intent
Little and hardly here

Chorus:

Day one, day one
Start over again
Step one, step one
I’m barely making sense
For now I’m faking it
‘Til I’m psuedo-making it
From scratch, begin again
But this time I as I
And not as we

Eyes wet toward wide open fright,
If God is taking bias, I pray he wants to lose,

Chorus:

Day one, day one
Start over again
Step one, step one
I’m barely making sense
For now I’m faking it
‘Til I’m psuedo-making it
From scratch, begin again
But this time I as I
And not as we… Not as we…

I’m interested in reactions or thoughts on the song, particularly from those who have been in therapy in the past or are currently in it. I believe it handles the idea of self discovery and understanding in a very reverent and respectful way.

  1. There are songs I used to listen to all the time that suddenly became hard to listen to as I am going through the process of therapy as well. I know I am constantly listening to the words of music instead of just feeling the music and melody. It is such a wonderful way to process through things you are convinced you are the only one thinking. This is a wonderful example. Thank you for sharing it.

  2. Thank you for sharing this song. It’s powerful and sums up my struggles with self discovery and the journey of therapy. I also find songs helpful, often finding that when I can not find the words or connect to my emotions, certain song will represent exactly what is going on.

Am off to upload it to my pod.

    • Therapy isn’t easy. I liken it fairly often to getting a wound cleaned. It hurts, and it’s often gross and somewhat annoying, but it’s ultimately very necessary and good. Those who think it’s a trip of self indulgent whining have no idea what they’re talking about – or they have very little to say.

  3. I am breaking up with my partner if seventten years. I interpreted it through that lens, one of seperation. I guess it depends on where you are what you rake from songs.

    • I’m sorry to hear about the stress you’re going through; even when it’s a necessary change, it can still be intensely stressful.

      All my best.
